On the Outside

Well, this was originally written for a friend about 10 years ago, but it's taken on new life lately, so on request, i'm sharing it.

Child let the fears go
Don't hold so tight anymore
Let out all the memories locked so deep inside

You've been hanging on for too long
Wearing a face that seeks to conceal
The truth, the heartache, the pain that's real

And everyday, you walk that tight rope
One breath away from falling
Everyday, I am dying
Just to be everything, you can't see...

So many people look at you and judge what they see on the outside
They look past a beauty that is so much more than skin deep
So many people look at you and judge what they see on the outside
They look past the beating broken heart that's buried so deep

Tired of their petty games
You pretend it's all the same
But I see the pain caused by the burdens that you bear

So you've tried to run and tried to hide
Tried to love, yet refused and denied
Walling in the truth, the heartache, the pain that's real

So many people look at you and judge what they see on the outside
They look past a beauty that is so much more than skin deep
So many people look at you and judge what they see on the outside
They look past the beating broken heart that's buried so deep

Caught in a desperate run from the past and all the pain
You tie yourself in a million knots, unsure of how to change
Reaching from the black for the hope in your heart
The scars aren't what they seem

You're beautiful
